Many people will build motivation in the work place or social situation, passively. This means that you build the motivation without trying. There are many ways that you can build motivation without even knowing it. Sometimes it’s just your natural personality and sometimes it’s from the knowledge that you have about a subject. When you have a authority you are able to motivate others passively. Authority has a lot of power, however, you’ll find that there are different types of authority that you can have but make sure that you use the power to motivate positively.
When it comes to your personality, you’ll find that others tend to listen to you because they like you. In fact, you’ll find that they’ll listen to you because they have come to know and trust your judgement. You have authority over them because of the fact that you are able to influence others. Others may find that you just seem to have the skills needed to be a leader.
You will find that if you take the time to know some of your co-workers they will, in return, respect you and listen to you. They will be more inclined to become motivated when you’re around because you’ve given them a strong basis for a friendly relationship. You personality has a lot to do with motivation. You can’t motivate someone if you’re not the type of person that can get others to listen. You don’t have to have a strong personality, but by taking the time to get to know some of the people who you meet with, you’ll be able to motivate them.
Also, you will notice that you can motivate others through your authority. You may be able to motivate someone just because you rank higher. This is where you have real authority over them and therefore have the right to tell them how to perform at work. When your boss comes around and asks you to do something, do you not always jump right on that? That’s the power of authority, however, there are several different types of authority and you’ll find they all can motivate others to work harder.
If you don’t have real authority over someone, you may have knowledge authority. You have power over others because you know so much about something. For those who can call themselves masters of a subject tend to be influential because of the fact that they know so much.
You can motivate someone because they like you, whether it be on a friendly or romantic relationship, you’ll find that they will look to you for advice and acceptance. This authority can motivate someone because they don’t want to disappoint you. Feelings such as this can be very strong and the motivation that you can give someone can be even stronger.
No matter what the reason is that you can motivate someone, you should feel happy knowing that you can motivate them. Motivation is a very powerful tool and it should be used with caution. Try to motivate someone for his or her own good, and not for yours.

A lot people believe they can’t change. “I yam what I yam,” Popeye habitually explains. Before any change can happen in your life, you have to believe that a cjange is possible. There comes a time when we must say, “I am willing to change.”
Beware of mental locks. Roger von Oech offers a list of what he calls “mental locks.” To break free of a life of procrastination and mediocrity we must guard our minds against thoughts that destroy our expectations of success. This quiz will help you identify areas where you can take action to change your attitude. Answer “yes” if you have ever thought or said the following:
- I’ve never been a creative person.
- Stay where you are until you have perfect visibility.
- Follow the rules.
- Please be logical!
- That doesn’t sound like the right answer.
- Please be practical about this!
- Avoid making mistakes at all costs.
- If this doesn’t work, I’ll look like a fool.
- That’s out of my area of expertise.
Choose one of your “yes” items and reflect on the last time you said or thought it. Did thinking or saying it cause you to procrastinate or give up?
Even a simple quiz like the one you can improve your ability to make things happen and get things done. Don’t expect to change your attitude by rushing through all the points at once. Work on one thing every day until people ask you what happened. When others start to see a change in your attitude, you’ll know that you’re winning the war against procrastination.
It all starts in your mind. When you have a total commitment to get things done you tap into unused capabilities you never knew you had. When you expect to be successful, you jump at the opportunity to do the very things that used to cause you to procrastinate.
Never lose your sense of humor. The great nineteenth-century Scottish physicist, James Clerk Maxwell, was told by his superiors at Cambridge University that he would be expected to attend a compulsory church service at 6:00 a.m. “Aye,” Maxwell said, “I suppose I could stay up that late.”
Always remember to beware of the mental locks that threaten to keep ustou in a vicious circle of procrastination and defeat. Make up your mind to rise above the level of mediocrity, give yourself a whack on the side of the head and do it.
